These spicy kafta patties are versatile and perfect for a stovetop or charcoal grill, served with creamy cucumber dill yogurt and fresh herbs.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 lb ground lamb (or just beef)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 tsp ground allspice
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 tbsp sweet paprika
  • 1 tbsp Aleppo pepper or chili flakes
  • 1/4 tsp cayenne
  • 1/2 tsp cumin
  • 1/2 large yellow onion, finely processed
  • 1 cup finely chopped parsley
  • A small handful of fresh mint (optional)
  • 3 to 4 minced garlic cloves
  • 1 cup Greek yogurt
  • 2 finely diced mini cucumbers
  • 2 tablespoons chopped dill
  • 1 minced garlic clove
  • Juice of half a lemon
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Mix the ground beef and ground lamb with salt, pepper, ground allspice, cinnamon, sweet paprika, Aleppo pepper or chili flakes, cayenne, and cumin.
  2. In a food processor, finely process the yellow onion and add it to the meat mixture.
  3. Add parsley, mint, and garlic cloves to the meat mixture. Mix well until evenly combined.
  4. Let the mixture sit in the fridge for 2 to 6 hours if possible, or cook immediately.
  5. Shape the mixture into logs or patties, about 3 to 4 inches long.
  6. Grill or pan-fry the patties. If using a pan, cook in a hot skillet over medium-high heat for about 3 minutes per side.
  7. Mix the Greek yogurt with finely diced cucumbers, chopped dill, minced garlic, lemon juice, olive oil, and season with salt and pepper.
  8. Warm low-carb pita, spread a generous amount of the yogurt spread, add the kafta patties, and top with thinly sliced cucumber, red onion, tomato, mint, and a sprinkle of sumac.
